GENERAL INFORMATION

Introduced in 1985 the Maxim X resulted from a request of Yamaha USA for a "little brother" to the upcoming V-Max. Mother Yamaha already had the 750 Maxim and the 750 Virago, and plans for the new FZ750 (to replace the vernerable 750 Seca). They balked at building yet another unique engine in that class, so a compromise was struck: Yamaha would design the new FZ "Genisis" 5-valve motor to fit on a standard XJ transmission utlizing the strengthened gearset of the XJ900 and 650 Turbo models, and the MaximX was born.

Well, stillborn. Production had already started when the US suddenly introduced the ITC tarrif. The tariff was an attempt to help out Harley Davidson Inc. and slapped a heavy penalty on all imported bikes above 700 cc's. Yamaha, in an effort to keep sales up and avoid excess taxation, destroked the MaximX engine while still maintaining a respectable 86hp and came up with the XJ700X for the US market. The existing stockpile of 90hp 750cc engines were diverted to the Canadian market, where there was no such tarrif. In late 1986, U.S. Courts rules the embargo illegal and cancelled it, but by that time the economic slump and resultant low sales figures for motorcycles in general had sounded the death-knell and the MaximX line was discontinued. Owners of MaximX 700's now own a piece of U.S. Legal history, and a "limited edition" (so to speak) bike.

 

MOTORCYCLE IDENTIFICATION

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

The vehicle identification number is stamped into the right side of the frame.

The vehicle identification number is used to identify your motorcycle and may be used to register your motorcycle with the licensing authority in your state or province.

ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER

The engine serial number is stamped into the right side of the engine. It normally follows the frame serial number, but there are some examples were they differ by a few numbers -- probably a mix-up on the production line when the engines were mated with the intended frames.

The first three digits of these numbers are for model identifications; the remaining digits are the unit production number.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

ALL REPLACEMENT PARTS

1. We recommend to use Yamaha genuine parts for all replacements. Use oil and/or grease recommended by Yamaha for assembly and adjustment.

GASKETS, OIL SEALS, AND O-RINGS

1.  All gaskets, seals, and O-rings should be replaced when an engine is overhauled. All gasket surfaces, oil seal lips, and O-rings must be cleaned.

2.  Properly oil all mating parts and bearings during reassembly. Apply grease to the oil seal lips.

LOCK WASHERS/PLATES AND COTTER PINS

1. All lock washers/plates (1) and cotter pins must be replaced when they are removed. Lock tab(s) should be bent along the bolt or nut flat(s) after the bolt or nut has been properly tightened.

BEARINGS AND OIL SEALS

1. Install the bearing(s) (1)  and oil seal(s) (2)  with their manufacturer's marks or numbers facing outward. (In other words, the stamped letters must be on the side exposed to view.) When installing oil seal(s), apply a light coating of light-weight lithium base grease to the seal lip(s). Oil the bearings liberally when installing.

CAUTION:
Do not use compressed air to spin the bearings dry. This causes damage to the bearing surfaces.

CIRCLIPS

1.All circlips should be inspected carefully before reassembly. Always replace piston pin clips after one use. Replace distorted circlips. When installing a circlip © , make sure that the sharp-edged corner © is positioned opposite to the thrust (3) it receives. See the sectional view.

SPECIAL TOOLS

The proper special tools are necessary for complete and accurate tune-up and assembly. Using the correct special tool will help prevent damage caused by the use of improper tools or improvised techniques.

FOR TUNE UP

1. Inductive Tachometer P/N. 90890-03113 This tool is needed for detecting engine rpm.

2. Inductive Timing Light P/N. 90890-03109 This tool is necessary for checking ignition timing.

3. Compression Gauge P/N. 90890-03081

This gauge is used to measure the engine compression.

4. Fuel Level Gauge P/N. 90890-01312 This gauge is used to measure the fuel level in the float chamber.

5. Vacuum gauge P/N. 90890-03094 This gauge is needed for carburetor synchronization.

FOR ENGINE SERVICE


1. Universal Clutch Holder P/N. 90890-04086 This tool is used to hold the clutch when removing or installing the clutch boss locknut.


2. Thickness Gauge P/N. 90890-01399

This gauge is needed for measuring the valve clearance.
* Less than 8 mm (0.31 in)
